Lucknow/Varanasi: Religious tourism in Uttar Pradesh is witnessing a sharp surge under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, with the iconic Kashi Vishwanath Temple recording an unprecedented influx of श्रद्धालु (devotees). According to official figures, nearly 6.5 million pilgrims visited the temple in March alone, setting a new benchmark for monthly footfall.
The massive turnout highlights not only the growing spiritual appeal of Varanasi but also the impact of large-scale infrastructural upgrades, particularly the development of the Kashi Vishwanath Dham Corridor. The corridor has transformed the temple परिसर (complex), replacing narrow, congested lanes with a vast, well-organised and accessible space for devotees.
Improved Facilities Enhance Devotee Experience
Authorities attribute the surge in visitor numbers to improved facilities and streamlined व्यवस्थाएं (arrangements). Enhanced cleanliness, modern sanitation infrastructure, availability of drinking water, and efficient queue management systems have significantly improved the overall pilgrimage experience.
Digital surveillance and strengthened security measures have further ensured a safe and smooth darshan process, enabling devotees to offer prayers with greater ease and comfort.
Infrastructure Boost Elevates Religious Tourism
Beyond the temple complex, extensive urban development has contributed to the city’s rising popularity as a global spiritual destination. Road widening projects, improved public transport, and the beautification of ghats along the Ganges River have added to the city’s appeal.
Attractive lighting installations and the introduction of cruise services on the Ganges now offer visitors a unique way to experience Kashi’s cultural and spiritual heritage. These initiatives have not only enriched the tourist experience but also boosted the local economy, benefiting hotels, guest houses, shopkeepers and other small businesses.

Government Credits Visionary Leadership
Uttar Pradesh Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for the transformation of Kashi.
He stated that the corridor project has expanded the temple area, allowing for a more seamless and spiritually fulfilling darshan experience. “Kashi today represents a perfect blend of faith, spirituality, and modern tourism,” the minister said, adding that initiatives such as ropeway projects, multi-level parking, smart city infrastructure, and riverfront development are positioning the city as a comprehensive tourism hub.
Economic and Cultural Impact
The surge in religious tourism has had a positive ripple effect on the local economy, generating employment opportunities and increasing income for residents. From hospitality to retail, multiple sectors have seen accelerated growth.
With record-breaking footfall and ongoing development projects, Varanasi continues to strengthen its position as a global centre of faith—where ancient spirituality meets modern infrastructure.
